Full-Day Kindergarten

How has Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) been implemented in Peel?

Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) was first implemented in Peel in September 2010 and was fully implemented in September 2014. The program is optional, so four- and five-year olds are not required to enrol in the program.

  • The Province and Peel's school boards have reported that 96% of eligible four- and five-year olds enrol in FDK
  • Over the five years of implementation (2010-2014), nearly 31,000 students enrolled in 289 schools in FDK

FDK has had impacts on child care because four- and five-year olds are leaving child care to enrol in FDK. As a result, child care providers need to look at opportunities to serve younger age groups (0 to 3.8 years) and provide before- and after-school care.
