Immigration

The immigrant population is made up of people who were born in a country other than Canada and have been granted permission to live in Canada permanently.

In 2001, 43.1 per cent of Peelís population were immigrants, up from 36.1 per cent in 1991.This represents a 60.8 per cent increase in immigrants over the ten year period. Peel had second highest percentage of immigrants in the GTA behind Toronto (44.4 per cent) and ahead of York (39.1 per cent).

Thirty seven per cent of Peelís immigrants arrived within the 10 years preceding the 2001 Census. Comparatively, in 1991, only 32.1 per cent of the immigrant population in Peel had arrived between 1981 and 1991.

The majority of Peelís recent immigrants (persons who immigrated to Canada between January 1, 1996 and May 15, 2001) are from Asian countries. In the past the majority of Peelís recent immigrants were from European countries.

This trend is evident when looking at the place of birth of recent immigrants. The top four places of birth of recent immigrants are listed below, along with the number of recent immigrants from that country (in brackets):

  1. India (21,795)
  2. Pakistan (10,445)
  3. Philippines (4,565)
  4. China (3,140)

In 2001, the top three places of birth for all immigrants living in Peel were India (64,460), the United Kingdom (32,980), and Poland (28,115).
