Households and Dwellings

Households are defined as a person or a group of persons (who may or may not be related) who occupy a private dwelling and do not have a usual place of residence elsewhere in Canada. From 1991 to 2001, one person households increased 46.8 per cent. Households with four or more persons increased slightly from 41.1 per cent to 41.8 per cent. Conversely, two and three person households decreased during the same time period to 24.7 per cent and 19.2 per cent of all household sizes respectively.

Since 1991, home ownership in Peel has increased. According to the 2001 Census, 74.4 per cent of Peelís private dwellings were owner-occupied, while 25.6 per cent were rented. In 1991, the figures were 68.3 per cent and 31.7 per cent. Though the number of rental units in Peel decreased from 1996 to 2001, there were still more rental units in 2001 than there were in 1991.

In 2001 single detached dwellings in Peel comprised about half of all dwelling types. From 1991 to 2001 the proportions of semi-detached and row houses increased and the proportion of apartments 5 stories and over decreased.
