Home Language

The census reports on Canada's language composition by mother tongue, home language and knowledge of Canada's official languages - English and French. Home language refers to the language spoken most often or on a regular basis at home at the time of the census. A non-official language is a language other than English or French.

 Home Languages in Peel

In 2001, 64.1 per cent of Peelís residents listed English as their only home language. Less than 1 per cent of Peelís residents listed French as their only home language.

Over a third of Peelís population reported speaking a non-official language at home. Punjabi was the most common non-official language spoken Ė over 30,000 reported this as their home language. Over 15,000 people in Peel reported Chinese as their home language while 12,000 people reported speaking only Polish in their homes.

Of the approximately 30,000 people that speak Punjabi in Peel, 60.5 per cent live in Brampton and 39.0 per cent live in Mississauga. Almost 90 per cent of the people that reported Chinese as their home language live in Mississauga.
