2011 Census: Marriage & Families

Married couples and single parents

  • In May 2011, 55.4% of people aged 15 years and older in Peel were married, compared to 50.9% in the GTA.
  • Since 2006, the number of married people increased 10.9% in Peel and 7.4% in the GTA. People who were never legally married accounted for 31.4% of people aged 15 years and older in Peel and 34.0% in the GTA.
  • People who were separated, divorced or widowed accounted for 13.2% of people aged 15 years and older in Peel and 15.1% in the GTA.
  • Of all 362,000 census families in Peel, 83.5% were couple families and 16.5% were lone-parent families. Of the 1,7 million census families in the GTA, 82.3% were couple families and 17.7% were lone-parent families.

Children

  • In Peel, 70.2% of married couples and 48.8% of common-law couples lived with children in 2011. In the GTA, 65.4% of married couples and 37.9% of common-law couples lived with children.
  • In Peel, there were 494,000 children living at home, up 11.2% from 2006.
  • 62.9% of those children were aged 0 to 17, while 22.4% were aged 18 to 24, and 14.7% were aged 25+.
  • Children living at home aged 0 to 17 grew 5.6% from 2006 to 2011, while children living at home aged 18 to 24 grew 18.1%, and those aged 25+ grew 28.7%.
