About Grown in Peel

History of Farming in Peel
Program Partners

Grown in Peel promotes local agriculture and plays a role in connecting producers with consumers. It links people to the farmers and farm families who produce their food, as well as the land where the food is grown.

Grown in Peel also supports the Region of Peel's work to increase residents' access to safe, healthy and affordable food.

Local produce is picked fresh and tastes great. Visiting a local farm allows people to see how food is produced and can be a fun and enriching experience.

The Region of Peel is proud to support local farmers and food production.

First settled in the 1800s, Peel was primarily forested land with fertile soils. Once the land was cleared, settlers were able to grow a bountiful supply of food. Eventually they were able to sell to larger markets, including the villages of Bolton, Brampton and Streetsville, as well as neighbouring Toronto.

Over time, many farmers specialized in grain crops and livestock while others chose unique specialties for local and international export. Peel's dairy and horse breeding operations, and commercial greenhouses became internationally renowned.

Peel farm families continue to be award-winning leaders and innovators in the food and farming industry. Today, Peel farmers take pride in producing a range of fruits, vegetables, grains, plants and livestock, just as they did 150 years ago.

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, the Region acknowledges the key role that farm families have had in building the viability and cultural heritage of Peel.
