Provincial Funding a “Gift” to Caregivers in Mississauga

More community supports coming for seniors and adults with disabilities

Mississauga seniors, and adults who need help to live independently in their own homes, will soon have more community support services.

Peel Regional Chair Emil Kolb said Council has approved Peel Long Term Care’s participation in a pilot program intended to expand community support services available for seniors and adults with disabilities. The program is funded through the Mississauga-Halton Local Health lntegration Network’s Caregivers First initiative.

“We are delighted to deliver more services that benefit caregivers who provide support and care for seniors or disabled adults. The funding will be used to expand the hours of operation of our adult day services (ADS) program at Sheridan Villa Long Term Care Centre and to offer a new community bathing service,” Chair Kolb said.

“The ADS program offers much needed respite for caregivers in our community, often spouses or adult children, who may have many other responsibilities. This program creates time for them to attend to those matters while their loved ones enjoy a variety of stimulating and social activities combined with personalized attention to their individual needs and abilities. They also receive assistance with personal care, eating, dressing, and toileting,” Chair Kolb said.

The pilot program will extend the ADS program hours of operation to include:

  • Saturday and Sunday programs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
including lunch, starting Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013
  • Evening programs, on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 3 to 9 p.m.,
including dinner, starting Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2013.

Community bathing services will be available Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m., starting Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. Home caregivers can reserve a 45-minute appointment for their loved one to have a shower with help from a personal support worker, in an accessible room, with assistive devices.

Both programs will be offered for a small cost:

  • Adult Day Services:  $20 per day / evening
  • Community bathing services:  $5 per appointment
