BRAMPTON, ON (December 9, 2011) – Joining the ranks of a select few paramedics across Ontario, Peel Regional Paramedic Services’ Deputy-Chief Ben Addley and Paramedics Audra Cole, Roland Garbe and Keith Young have received special recognition by the Governor General for their exemplary service as long-standing paramedics and for the communities they serve.
“Without a doubt, Peel Paramedics have stepped up to the plate in making this one of the best paramedic services in Canada,” stated Regional Councillor Paul Palleschi, Chair of the Emergency and Protective Services Committee, during the Regional Council session held on Thurs., December 8, 2011.
Every year, as part of the Canadian Honours Programme, the Governor General’s Emergency Medical Services - Exemplary Service Medal is presented to paramedic professionals who must have a minimum of 20 years of exemplary service in this high-risk profession, with at least 10 years of that service performed on the frontlines and contributing to the health and safety of the community.
“Each and every day paramedics from across the province place themselves in situations where most people would not like to be,” says Chief Peter F. Dundas, Peel Regional Paramedic Services, and former Paramedic. “These individuals save lives, treat very complex patients and provide care for those in their most vulnerable moments.”
The four Peel Paramedics were presented with their Exemplary Service Medal by the Governor General’s representative, Canada’s most decorated civilian, retired Major-General Richard Rohmer on September 28, at the annual general meeting and awards night of the Association of Municipal Emergency Medical Services of Ontario.
After 30 years of service Paramedic Roland Garbe has many memories. “Seeing someone with no vital signs live to walk out of the hospital is awesome. Delivering a healthy baby is always amazing and the most nerve-wracking!” According to Roland, for many paramedics, the real reward of working in this high-risk profession is “doing a job that is appreciated and going home knowing that you’ve helped someone in some way.”
Peel Paramedics respond to more than 84,000 emergency medical calls every year. For more information about Peel Regional Paramedic Services, visit peelems.ca or call 905-791-7800, ext. 3956.
