The Hanlan Water Project is the largest and most extensive watermain project the Region has ever designed and constructed. The project is needed to meet the water demands of future planned and approved population growth, including the Mississauga city centre core. The infrastructure will also provide operational flexibility in the event that the existing Hanlan Feedermain needs to be temporarily shut off for maintenance. The project will require a mix of open-cut and tunnelling during construction, and will have an impact on traffic in localized areas. The Hanlan Water Project also marks the start of water distribution infrastructure renewal in neighboring communities.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
