Peel Certified General Accountants Offer Income Tax Preparation Services for Low Income Individuals and Families

BRAMPTON, ON (Feb. 28, 2011) Ė The Region of Peelís Human Services department is pleased to partner again with the Certified General Accountants of Ontario, Peel Chapter, to offer free income tax preparation services for low income individuals and families. CGA Ontario, Peel Chapter, will be preparing tax returns in March and April 2011 as part of Canada Revenue Agency's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. Advance registration is required.

This service is available to individuals with a gross income (before deductions) under $27,500 or families with a gross income under $35,000.

Income Tax returns with the following types of income and/or expenses do not qualify for volunteer tax assistance as these types of returns are more complex and require additional time to prepare:

  • Rental income (or losses)
  • Business income (or losses)
  • Foreign income
  • Capital gains (or losses)
  • Employment expenses
  • Support payments (paid or received)
  • Interest income exceeds $1,000
  • Returns for deceased individuals
  • Returns for bankrupt individuals
  • Corporate or trust income tax returns

Returns for tax years 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 can be done if each tax return meets the above rules, and only at the clinics offered on March 26 and April 16. This service is available for residents of Ontario only (out-of-province returns cannot be done). E-filing is also available at certain locations; where e-filing is not available, the accountants will prepare paper copies of the Tax Return and clients will be responsible for mailing their completed return to the Canada Revenue Agency. E-filing is not available for those submitting a tax return for the first time.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program links certified general accountants to taxpayers who need help in filing their tax returns. Volunteers across Peel donate their time to ensure citizens have access to their services. The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
