Peel Region the First Government in Canada to Earn the National
Quality Institute’s Top Honour for Excellence

(Brampton) – At a meeting of Regional Council on Oct. 26, 2006, the Region of Peel was recognized for achieving the Canada Award for Excellence (CAE) Gold Trophy from the National Quality Institute (NQI). The prestigious CAE is the highest level of recognition awarded by NQI to organizations that have successfully maintained a focus on organizational excellence, quality and continuous improvement.

"We are proud of this achievement,” said Regional Chair Emil Kolb. “This award is a testament to the many accomplishments made over the past several years which we have earned through the strength of our partnerships with Council, our stakeholders, area municipalities, our community and our employees.”

The CAE is an annual awards program that recognizes organizations which, through a commitment to innovation, productivity, healthy workplace, and ethics have demonstrated sustainable measures of continuous improvement. To achieve this status of excellence, representatives of the Institute examined the government's approach to leadership, planning, customer service, employee satisfaction, process management and partnering. The rigorous four-level certification process of NQI’s Progressive Excellence Program (PEP) leads to eligibility for the CAE.

“From providing health and paramedic services to road and water infrastructures, we will continue to build on the high level of trust and confidence our citizens have in the Region of Peel by being one of the best governments in Canada,” added Chair Kolb.

“The Region of Peel, through its commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, has shown itself to be an outstanding role model of organizational effectiveness,” said Allan Ebedes, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Quality Institute and Canada Awards for Excellence.

“This award speaks to the strong level of commitment that we have toward delivering quality programs and services that benefit Peel citizens every day,” said Regional Councillor Gael Miles, and Chair of the Management Committee. “Our taxpayers can be confident that they have a high-performing municipal government working for them.”

The Region of Peel reached its first milestone of its excellence journey in 2000 when TransHelp, the Region’s para-transit services, was recognized by the NQI with a PEP Level 2 certification. The Region as a whole achieved Level 2 in 2002, and Level 3 in 2004. Upon achieving Level 4 certification in 2006, the Region progressed to achieve the Canada Award for Excellence.

“Our award-winning services and debt-free operations have earned Peel its reputation as a leader in municipal government,” said David Szwarc, Chief Administrative Officer. “It’s a privilege to work with our Council and with our nearly 4,500 employees who are to be applauded for their unwavering spirit of commitment and passion for continuous improvement.”

The NQI Canada Awards for Excellence are presented annually to private, public and not-for-profit sector organizations that have displayed outstanding performance as measured by NQI. In achieving this designation, the Region joins an exclusive list of Canada's leading corporations involved in continuous improvement through the NQI, among them Delta Hotels, 3M Canada Company and Xerox Canada, all known for their strategic successes, as well as their commitment to their employees and customers.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
