Region of Peel Proclaims Children's Water Awareness Week May 29 to June 4, 2003

Brampton, ON - To mark the 8th successful year of the Peel Children's Water Festival (CWF), the Region of Peel has issued a proclamation declaring the week of May 29 to June 4, 2003, as Children's Water Awareness Week. A copy of the proclamation is attached.

The 8th Annual Peel Childrens Water Festival will take place at Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton and will provide fun, hands-on learning activities for more than 5,000 pre-registered students from all area of Peel. Student activities will take place on Thursday, May 29, Friday, May 30 and from Monday, June 2 to Wednesday, June 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., each day.

Peel residents are invited to attend Public Day on Saturday, May 31. They'll have the opportunity to see Franklin the Turtle in concert, watch exciting dragon boat races, witness the drilling and decommissioning of a well and more! Admission is free to this event.

The Region of Peel is the lead agency involved in organizing the Festival, which relies upon the support of more than 500 volunteers each year. Since its inception in 1996, PCWF has provided an environmental education program to over 30,000 Peel elementary school students. Through over 50 interactive activity centres, students in Grades 2-5 have the opportunity to learn about: the physical science of water, the treatment and distribution systems of Peel's water, surface and groundwater as resources, the interaction between people, and water and its affect on the environment, source and environmental protection, environmental stewardship and waste disposal alternatives.

This year the Festival will host the first Peel Eco-Fair, an event that will showcase, motivate and celebrate projects that have a positive impact on watershed quality and that are initiated by students in Peel Region schools. Planned as a collaborative effort between festival organizers and the Peel Public Works Peel Water Curriculum Resource Committee, the Eco-Fair will operate concurrently to the traditional Festival Events.
