The Region of Peel Promotes Environmental Initiatives in April

(Brampton) – Regional Council has proclaimed the last two weeks in April as Earth Week and Compost Awareness Week in Peel. Staff will take this opportunity to promote existing Regional programs and to increase environmental responsibility through education and awareness.

This year’s Earth Week is from April 20 to 26 and Compost Awareness Week is from April 27 to May 3, 2003. The focus of both events is to educate residents on the 3Rs, to provide simple steps on becoming more environmentally conscious and to promote the benefits of producing and using compost on lawns and gardens.

“The Region of Peel will use these events to promote our dedication to preserving, protecting and enhancing Peel’s natural resources,” says Emil Kolb, Regional Chair. “We are committed to working with residents to effectively plan for the future of our community.”

In celebration of Earth Week and Compost Awareness Week, the Region of Peel will:

  • Hold workshops and tours at the Brampton and Bolton Community Recycling Centres
  • Participate in the Caledon Home Show
  • Hold a school gardening contest
  • Publish a daily quiz on the Region’s Web site about waste reduction, recycling and compost use
  • Set-up displays in the main lobby of 10 Peel Center Dr. and the DaimlerChrysler Plant in Brampton

“Earth Week and Compost Awareness Week provide us with a prime opportunity to further educate residents about the benefits of waste reduction and composting,” says Andrew Pollock, Director of Waste Management. “Knowing how these initiatives impact on the environment can help residents see how their everyday efforts help us meet our waste diversion goals.”

The Region of Peel is committed to providing environmentally responsible waste management services in the Town of Caledon and in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga.
