(Brampton) – The Region of Peel received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting (CAnFR) from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive 2001 annual financial report.

Regional Councillor R. Whitehead; Peel Region’s Commissioner of Finance, Dan Labrecque; Peel Regional Chair Emil Kolb; Regional Councillor G. Miles and Peel’s Chief Administrative Officer, Roger Maloney accept the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for the Region of Peel’s 2001 annual financial report.
“Regional staff has truly demonstrated that they are highly skilled and dedicated professionals who develop innovative and creative ways to deliver financial information to the citizens and businesses in Peel Region,” says Roger Maloney, the Region of Peel’s Chief Administrative Officer.

The GFOA award was presented during Regional Council and is considered the highest form of recognition for excellence in governmental and financial accounting, representing a significant accomplishment by a municipal government and its management.

“It is an honour to be recognized by our peers across North America,” says Dan Labrecque, Commissioner of Finance. “We are extremely pleased that we were able to demonstrate how the annual financial report shows our fiscal accountability, our responsible management practices and our commitment to the community.”

The annual financial report was judged by impartial Canadian Review Committee members to meet the high standards of the program, including a demonstration of a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” designed to clearly communicate the municipality’s financial story and to motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting program was established to encourage municipal governments throughout Canada to publish high quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports.

The GFOA is a non-profit professional association serving 12,300 government finance professionals in the United States and Canada.
