Regional Council Approves Information Exchange Agreement

(Brampton) - Regional Council has approved the recommendation for an agreement between the Region of Peel and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) for the mutual exchange of Geographic Information System (GIS) data. The exchange is a cost effective method of acquiring information needed to support the delivery of Regional services.

GIS maintains a variety of geographic information to support the delivery of Regional programs such as child care, health planning and growth management. The Region of Peel has the need for increased ecological and environment data, while the MNR is interested in data relating to planning and public works.

"This agreement allows the Region to engage in mutually beneficial external partnerships," says Regional Chair Emil Kolb. "Sharing information and working together ensures residents receive the highest quality programs in the most cost effective manner."

The sharing of data by government agencies reduces costs and the duplication of efforts associated with each organization separately maintaining all types of information.

"Both the Region and the Ministry benefit from this agreement," says Nick Tunnacliffe, Commissioner of Planning. "We hope the success of this partnership will lead to increased collaborations by organizations that possess GIS information."

The Region plans to continue to encourage external partnerships with the province, other municipalities in the GTA and with the public sector.
