New Community Recycling Centres a Convenience to Local Residents
(Brampton) - Two proposed Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) in Mississauga are an exciting program enhancement that will provide convenient and accessible services to area residents and small businesses.
The proposed CRCs would be located on Lakeshore Road in South East and South West Mississauga, and are part of a network of six CRCs planned for the Region of Peel, as detailed in the Region's Long Term Waste Resource Management Strategy, designed to achieve a target diversion rate of 70 per cent by 2016.
"The CRC concept is intended to provide the same level of service Region-wide within a 10-minute driving radius for local residents and small businesses," says Andrew Pollock, Director, Waste Management for the Region of Peel. "Mississauga residents have historically supported the Region's seasonal Environment Day events, and the CRC is a convenient extension of this service."
A Community Recycling Centre is a unique facility specially designed to accept and accommodate a wide range of recyclable materials, some of which are not accepted in a curbside collection program. A CRC also accepts non-recyclable municipal materials as a convenient option for residents. The existing Bolton Community Recycling Centre and Britannia Public Waste and Recycling Depot have operated successfully since 1998 and 1980 respectively. A new Brampton CRC is planned to open in late fall.
The Region of Peel maintains the CRCs according to strict operational procedures, and is regulated by an Ontario Ministry of the Environment Certificate of Approval to ensure that the facility is operated in an environmentally safe and acceptable manner.
"We constantly monitor the practices and procedures of our Bolton CRC, and will be conducting a waste composition study there shortly to determine the various types and volumes of material currently coming into the centre," says Pollock. "We will use the success of the Bolton centre as our blueprint for other CRCs in Peel Region."
Features of each facility include:
- A Public Drop-off area for recyclable materials (including wood, scrap metal, drywall, cardboard, tires, shingles and large appliances) and yard waste, as well as non-recyclable municipal materials
- A Reusable Goods Retail Centre
- A Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-off Area and Reuse Centre
- An Education Centre for Regional Waste Management Programs
