Chegoggin: A Co-operative Housing Community
Chegoggin is a 120 unit co-operative housing building located at 11 Church Street West in downtown Brampton. With 77 2-bedroom units and 43 1-bedroom units, the 15-storey apartment building has a rich mix of residents in terms of age and household composition. As a co-op, all residents are members of the Chegoggin housing co-operative and play some role in running the building. Each household is a part-owner in the non-profit co-op corporation, and the corporation in turn rents the building’s units to member households. Chegoggin is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected from among the resident members. Members are expected to volunteer and actively participate in the life of the co-operative by assisting with a committee, serving on the Board of Directors, or performing some other useful task.
Seventy-five of Chegoggin’s units are subsidized and their residents pay 30% of their income in rent. The remaining fifty units have market level rents, 6 of the 2-bedroom units are wheelchair accessible, and 4 units are for mentally challenged tenants. Built under the Provincial Non-Profit Housing Program in 1992, approximately 25% of residents are original members. The majority of those leaving have gone on to buy their own home.
North of downtown Brampton’s main intersection of Queen and Main Streets, Chegoggin has a very convenient and assessable location. The amenities of downtown Brampton include diverse shopping and dining opportunities, live music and a weekly summer farmers market. The building’s immediate neighbours are the GO transit rail and bus station and it is just around the corner from Brampton’s new state-of-the-art, 850-seat Rose Theatre.
The Chegoggin Co-operative and its units offer the following features:
- Hardwood floors

- Outdoor play area
- Laundry room
- Bicycle storage
- Recreation room
