Business Bankruptcies

  • In the first quarter (January – March) of 2017, a total of 15 business bankruptcies were recorded in the Region of Peel.
  • This was comparable to the 16 cases registered in the similar three month period of the preceding year, but at one less case, the downward trend in the occurrence of business bankruptcies in Peel Region continued (-6.3 per cent).
  • This downward trend continued into the second quarter (April – June 2017 when a total of 17 business bankruptcies were recorded compared with 18 cases in the second quarter of 2016.
  • As a result, the total number of business bankruptcies registered in Peel Region for the first half of 2017 was 32 cases, down 5.9 per cent from the 34 cases registered in January – June 2016.
  • Viewed by municipalities, the decline in business bankruptcies in January – June 2017 reflected lower business bankruptcies in two of the three area municipalities as follows:
    • City of Mississauga: down 16.0 per cent from 25 cases in January – June 2016 to 21 cases in January – June 2017; and
    • City of Brampton: down 14.3 per cent from 7 cases to 6 cases respectively over the same time period.

  • The number of business bankruptcies recorded in the Town of Caledon increased from 2 cases in January – June 2016 to 5 cases in January – June 2017.
  • In all three municipalities, the number of business bankruptcies registered in January – June 2017 remained low by historic standards.
