Curry Clifford, Director, Strategic Innovation and Policy, reported that on December 16, 2008, the federal Finance Minister will meet with his provincial counterparts and on January 16, 2009, the Prime Minister will host a meeting with provincial Premiers. These meetings could provide an opportunity to remind the federal and provincial governments of the needs in the Region of Peel.
Chair Kolb stated that there may be an opportunity for the Region, along with its three municipal partners, to advise the two federal representatives of the capital ten year programs of all four municipalities, in order to advance those projects.
Chair Kolb stated that in order to raise these issues during the consultation process leading up to a January 27, 2009 federal budget presentation, the Region will need to produce a proposal in early January.
That staff develop action plans to accompany the policy positions identified by Regional Council during the 2008 federal election, for consideration at the December 18, 2008 Government Relations Committee meeting;
And further, that the Government Relations Committee continue to communicate to the federal government on the following policy positions:
• Reducing poverty;
• Affordable housing;
• Employment Insurance: and
• Health Care
And further, that the Government Relations Committee identify and advocate on additional public policy areas affecting the economic competitiveness of the Region of Peel, including long-term, sustainable funding for infrastructure and goods movement projects.
