Peel Newcomer Strategy Group (PNSG)

Regional Council received a delegation from Aamna Ashraf, Director, Peel Newcomer Strategy Group (PNSG) who provided information regarding regional alignment and a collective impact report for 2012-2013.

The PNSG was established by the United Way and Region of Peel in 2006 and is a community collaborative designed to enhance the social and economic inclusion of immigrants to the Peel community. PNSG is a strong community partner with an excellent history of working to improve newcomer settlement and integration in Peel Region.

The Collective Impact Report (2012-2013) provides a broad framework for the collaborative work and measurement indicators for success. The report is a starting point to implement the Peel community plan over the next five years.

Through multi-funder support and diverse partnerships, PNSG continues to champion the successful social and economic inclusion of immigrants in Peel.

Breast Feeding Initiatives to Increase Exclusivity Rates in Peel

Regional Council received a report describing initiatives to increase breastfeeding exclusivity rates in the Region of Peel.

Peel Public Health has been working in collaboration with area hospitals to address low breastfeeding exclusivity rates. Breastfeeding rates in the Region of Peel fall short of national and international targets.

In an effort to increase breastfeeding rates, a new model of service delivery will be piloted at Peel breastfeeding clinics; processes and policies will be enhanced; and enhanced support will be provided to hospital staff to obtain Baby-friendly Initiative designation through an intervention project with Trillium Health Services and by developing strategies with Brampton Civic Hospital to build on and improve current initiatives that support breastfeeding mothers.

Breastfeeding is an essential component of child health promotion. Peel Public Health is committed to working collaboratively with Peel area hospitals to improve breastfeeding exclusivity rates.
