Pride Week - July 19 to 28, 2013

Regional Council proclaimed July 19 to 28, 2013 as Pride Week in the Regional Municipality of Peel.

In 2011, the Region of Peel became a signatory member of the Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CMARD), which aims to develop strategies and actions towards eliminating racism and discrimination in our communities.

Greg Roach, Co-Founder and Current Chair, Pride Committee of Peel, delegated to Council and provided an overview of events planned to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Pride Committee of Peel and Pride Week Peel, including an all-ages family oriented picnic to be held July 20, 2013 at Chinguacousy Park.

The Region of Peel supports a positive, safe and inclusive environment and recognizes that discrimination against lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and the transgendered community must be prevented and awareness and acceptance is crucial to the foundation of a free, peaceful and just society.

Health
Review of Peel Public Health Influenza Immunization Clinics and Inclusion of Pharmacists in Ontario’s Universal Influenza
Immunization Program

Regional Council approved a recommendation from Peel Public Health to continue to offer influenza immunization clinics in large malls within Mississauga and Brampton and one community clinic in Caledon. In addition, the Regional Chair was requested to write to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, on behalf of Regional Council, to advocate for an increase in the per dose funding of influenza immunizations by Ontario public health units to match the funding provided to pharmacists who administer influenza immunizations.

Approximately 30-40 per cent of people in the Region of Peel and the Province of Ontario receive influenza immunizations each year. Peel Public Health administers a small proportion, less than 3 per cent of influenza immunizations. With the expansion of the Universal Influenza Immunization Program on October 15, 2012 to include pharmacists, it is anticipated that the attendance at Peel Public Health’s community clinics will continue to decline as it has by 20 per cent from last season.

Peel Public Health supports the expansion of the influenza immunization program to include pharmacies as another option for residents to access the influenza immunization and will continue to promote the availability of the influenza immunization in pharmacies via their communications to Peel residents.

Management
Commissioner of Human Services Elected President of Ontario Municipal Social Services Association (OMSSA)
Regional Council received a report from the Chief Administrative Officer announcing the election of Janet Menard, Commissioner of Human Services, as President of the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association (OMSSA) for the coming year.

Janet has been a member of OMSSA for over twenty years and has served on the Board of Directors for four years. OMSSA was established in 1950 as a non-profit organization and supports leadership in integrated human services through strong local service system management and promotes policy and program delivery solutions to strengthen local service system management and human services integration.

OMSSA’s role is critical in this time of significant change in human services. Regional Council is enthusiastic about Janet Menard’s one year Presidency as it provides an excellent opportunity to see her valuable work continue in the delivery of human services across the Province.
