Announcement from Regional Chair Kolb

Regional Chair Kolb announced that he would not be seeking re-election as Regional Chair at the end of the current term in November 2014.

“I am very proud to have served as a member of Regional Council since the formation of the Region of Peel 40 years ago. The timing will be right to hand the reins over to someone else to lead Council into the future” said Regional Chair Kolb, who is also Chief Executive Officer of the Region of Peel.

He acknowledged the support of the public, Council, businesses and staff of the Region of Peel and noted that 2014 is the Region of Peels 40th Anniversary which provides an ideal opportunity to reflect on its history and to celebrate its success.

Several members of Regional Council shared their experience working with Regional Chair Kolb, highlighting his integrity, sense of fairness, honesty, work ethic and leadership.

Senior of the Year Award Presentation to Annie Liem

Janet Menard, Commissioner of Human Services, presented the Senior of the Year Award to Annie Liem on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. Mrs. Liem has dedicated much of her life to helping those less fortunate and was instrumental in supporting families and seniors in securing affordable housing in Peel over the last 30 years.

She was nominated for the award by the Region of Peel Human Services Leadership Team, in recognition of her contributions to the community through serving as Board Member and Tenant Relations at Wisma Mega Indah Incorporated and her role with Creditvale Mills. Her most recent contributions have been focused on assisting seniors as they move from independent living to assisted care.

Annie Liem’s passion for achieving excellence has been critical in the foundation and progression of Wisma and under her guidance and direction it has become a model of housing management and tenant engagement that others seek to achieve.

Regional Council congratulated Mrs. Liem on her accomplishments and recognized the great impact she has made on the community.

Mrs. Liem’s passion for assisting seniors comes from her caring and generous nature and she truly is an inspiration to others. The Region of Peel is both fortunate and honoured to have such an individual take initiative and pride in improving the wellbeing of seniors in our community.

Council Approves Plan to Build an Energy Recovery Centre

Regional Council approved the issuing of a Request for Prequalification to pre-qualify established thermal conversion technologies and project teams to design, build, operate and maintain the proposed Peel Energy Recovery Centre.

Regional Council also approved the issuing of a Request for Proposal to the pre-qualified project teams inviting them to submit proposals to design, build, operate and maintain the proposed Peel Energy Recovery Centre for a 20 to 30 year operating term.

Using an established energy-from-waste technology, the Peel Energy Recovery Centre will process 300,000 tonnes per year of Peel’s residential garbage to produce useable energy, such as steam or electricity and recover recyclable metals. It will allow the Region of Peel to reduce the overall volume of waste going to landfill by up to 90 per cent, decreasing its reliance on landfill disposal and its impact on the environment.

Regional Chair Kolb will meet with the Minister of Energy to ask the Minister to direct the Ontario Power Authority to negotiate a Power Purchase Agreement with the Region of Peel, with key terms to be agreed upon by December 2013.

The development of the Peel Energy Recovery Centre is a key component of the Region’s Long Term Waste Management Strategy, which aims to recover and effectively use resources from our waste stream in order to conserve natural resources
