Retirement of Regional Councillor Prentice, City of Mississauga, Ward 3
 

Members of Regional Council commended Councillor Prentice for her many years of service to the residents of the Region of Peel and the City of Mississauga and for her leadership in the areas of Public Works and Waste Management. Regional Chair Kolb and Members of Regional Council extended their best wishes to Councillor Maja Prentice, City of Mississauga, Ward 3 who is retiring at the end of the current term of council.

Delegations
Peel Paramedics Deployed to Haiti following the January 12, 2010 Earthquake

Regional Council received a delegation from GlobalMedic, presenting letters of commendation on behalf of Premier Dalton McGuinty, to Peel Paramedics who were deployed to Haiti following the January 12, 2010 Earthquake. Peel Paramedics Sarah Caloccia, Mike Thomas and Sean Large received letters of commendation for their work with the Rapid Response Team, for which each volunteered using their personal time.

American Public Works Association Community Involvement Award
 

Regional Council received a delegation from Dan Labrecque, Commissioner of Public Works, advising that Linda Petelka, Manager, Wastewater Program Planning, was presented with the American Public Works Association Community Involvement Award. Linda’s distinguished leadership and numerous contributions to the Peel community have earned her this prestigious honour.

Management
2011 Regional Council and Committee Meeting Schedule
 

Regional Council approved the 2011 Regional Council and Committee schedule for a trial period from January to June 2011. During the trial period, General Committee will be eliminated, Regional Council will meet on the second and fourth Thursday of the month and Committee meetings will be held on the alternate Thursdays, the first and third.

2010 Peel Children’s Water Festival
 

 Regional Council received information on the 2010 Peel Children’s Water Festival (PCWF). This year marked the 15 th anniversary of the Festival with more than 10,670 people attending the annual event. The PCWF had 50 interactive activities focusing on environmental conservation and stewardship and highlighting the theme for 2010, “Where does the water go after you use it?”

Families First Research Results and Proposed Next Steps

 

Regional Council approved the continued support of the Families First program, which is a Region of Peel program for sole support parents that augments social assistance with additional health, employment, and child care services and recreation opportunities for children. The program assisted 1,460 sole support families from 2000 to 2006. Research indicates significant improvements in the lives of sole support parents and their children, in addition to savings to taxpayer-funded programs in the areas of social assistance, health care and corrections. The program helps individuals and families participate fully in the economic, social and cultural life of the community.

Proclamations
  Regional Council proclaimed the following events:

September 20 to 24, 2010 was proclaimed “Learn at Work Week”, to promote learning and development of Region of Peel staff.

October, 2010 was proclaimed “Child Abuse Prevention Month”, to raise awareness of the child abuse problem through the Abuse Prevention Campaign.

October 1 to 7, 2010 was proclaimed “World Breastfeeding Week 2010”, to raise awareness and support of breastfeeding.

October 4 to 8, 2010 was proclaimed “Customer Service Week”, to recognize customer service as an important goal for all Regional programs.

October 4 to 31, 2010 was proclaimed “Healthy Workplace Month”, to advance workplace health, safety and wellness.

October 17 to 25, 2010 was proclaimed “Week of the Child”, promoting the ‘Krayons for Kids’ campaign, which provides craft supplies to several local organizations in Peel.

October 21, 2010 was proclaimed “Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day,” to educate the public about the value of quality Early Childhood Education.

November 20, 2010 was proclaimed “National Child Day”, highlighting the services Peel offers to uphold the rights of children.

November 25, 2010 was proclaimed “The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women”, to raise awareness about violence against women and prevention activities that attempt to eliminate all forms of women abuse.

December 13 to 17 was proclaimed “9-1-1 Awareness Week”, to educate the public about the appropriate use of the 9-1-1 emergency system.
