Delegations
Maanjidowin Native Powwow and Métis Rendezvous 2010
  Regional Council received a delegation from Scott Mair and Carolyn King regarding the Maanjidowin Native Powwow and Métis Rendezvous for 2010. The Maanjidowin is an event organized and led by Heritage Mississauga in partnership with the Credit River Métis Council, Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, and the Peel Aboriginal Steering Committee. The event which will take place at J.C. Saddinton Park, Port Credit on July 17 and 18, 2010. The Maanjidowin will celebrate the Aboriginal Heritage of Peel with a sunrise ceremony, a traditional powwow along with a wide variety of entertainment while raising awareness and educating Peel residents about the Aboriginal peoples’ heritage and culture.

Health
Built Environment and Health Initiatives Update
Regional Council received an update report regarding built environment and health initiatives as requested by Regional Council in 2005 to research and make recommendations for planning policies that create move health-promoting communities. As a result the Health Department established a Healthy Development Index which identifies built environment characteristics t which help contribute to optimal design for a healthy community. Recent funding from the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer will be used to develop policies utilizing the Healthy Development Index.

Update on the Region of Peel Seniors’ Low-Income Dental Program
 

Regional Council approved additional funding in the amount of $2 million to the Seniors’ Dental Program. The Seniors’ Dental Program was established in 2008 as the need for oral health as part of overall health was recognized for low-income seniors. The program is funded 100 per cent by the Region of Peel. The additional funding is in response to the 3,210 people on the waitlist, which has an average wait time of nine to 12 months. The additional funding should allow for 1,200 more low-income seniors to receive dental treatment.

Human Services
Human Services Leadership Update
 

Regional Council received information about the Human Services restructuring as it transitions to an integrated service delivery approached, organizational structure. The new divisions are Client and Community Access; Ontario Works and Early Learning Services; Service Systems Management; Children’s Services Operations; Residential Property Management/ Peel Living; Integrated Business Support and Strategic Planning, Policy and Partnership.

Amendments to the 2010 Regional Council and Committee Meeting Schedule
 

Regional Council approved the revised 2010 Regional Council and Committee schedule. The schedule was revised due to changes to the Municipal Election date, which is now scheduled for Monday, October 25, 2010. The revised schedule can be found at on the Region of Peel Council website at www.peelregion.ca/council/.

Heritage Program Annual Campaign

 

Regional Council approved the heritage program annual campaign, including the provision of a special campaign which will be used to offset the costs incurred during the recent renovations and expansion to the Peel Heritage Complex Facility. Thee costs include installations of new exhibitions, events and capital costs. A new fund will be established to ensure transparency of the special campaign.

Consolidated Wastewater By-law and Approval of Proposed Set Fines Part I

 

Regional Council passed a consolidated wastewater by-law and approved set fines for violations. The wastewater by-law ensures that the Region of Peel infrastructure, natural environment and water quality are protected.
