Public Health Four-Year Plan, 2010 – 2013
 

Regional Council approved the Public Health Four-Year Plan, 2010-2013. Dr. David Mowat, Medical Officer of Health, provided an overview of the Public Health Four-Year Plan. Dr. Mowat described a number of proposed service improvements contained in the Public Health Four-Year Plan including targeted interventions to address the increasing rates of obesity and diabetes; tobacco use prevention; increased dental screening for children and more inspection of food premises.

Management
3-1-1 Service Update
 

Regional Council received an update on the 3-1-1 services. The service is designed to provide a single point of contact for non-emergency municipal services. The 3-1-1 service is provided through a partnership between the Region of Peel, Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon. The 3-1-1 number has received 8,593 calls during the first six months of operation.

Results of Earth Hour 2010
 

Earth Hour is a World Wildlife Fund initiative in which participants switch off their lights and unplug their electronic appliances for one hour to reduce global energy consumption and raise awareness about energy conservation. Regional Council learned that during Earth Hour the Region of Peel reduced electric consumption at Regional facilities by 7.3 per cent. Earth Hour was held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Peel Region Official Plan Review (PROPR) - Adoption of Regional Official Plan Amendment Number 21B
 

Regional Council approved P eel Region Official Plan Review (PROPR) - Adoption of Regional Official Plan Amendment (ROPA) Number 21B. ROPA 21B establishes the Regional Official Plan with regards to natural heritage and agriculture policies.

Peel Active Transportation Initiative Status Update and the Launch of the Active Transportation Website
 

Regional Council received information on the launch of the new active transportation website. The website is developed to encourage people to use active modes of transportation, such as walking and cycling. The website contains useful information including a user-friendly web-based map that shows existing on-road and off-road bicycle and pedestrian options throughout the Region of Peel.

Proclamation
National Access Awareness Week - May 31 to June 6, 2010
 

Regional Council proclaimed May 31 to June 6, 2010 “National Access Awareness Week”. National Access Awareness Week is celebrated to show support to residents with disabilities and to promote better community access to people with disabilities. During the week, the Accessibility Planning Program will be promoting Emergency Preparedness for Peel Residents with Disabilities to educate the community on how to assist people with disabilities in an emergency or disaster situation.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
 

Regional Council proclaimed June 15, 2010 “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day”. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is declared annually on June 15 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is honoured to encourage older adults to seek support if they are experiencing forms of abuse and for organizations to share information on resources available to older adults in need.

Seniors' Month - June 2010
 

Regional Council proclaimed June “Seniors’ Month”. During the month of June the contributions of seniors are acknowledged and honoured throughout the province. Seniors’ Month provides an opportunity to highlight some of the services that the Region provides directly for seniors including: the Peel Advisory Working Group on Older Adults’ Housing (PAWGOAH), which promotes a variety of housing options for the 55-plus age group; Peel Long Term Care, which operates five long-term care homes with over 700 beds, four of the homes also have adult day programs to provide relief and support to caregivers; and, the Region’s Senior’s Dental Program for seniors who are unable to afford dental treatment.
