Update on the Activities of the Peel Francophone Steering Committee
 

Genevieve Gareau-Mosse, Directeur/Principle, Ecole Rene Lamoureux, Mississauga, Conseil Scolaire de district Catholique Centre-Sud and Helen Lewis-FitzGerald, Community Engagement Specialist, Human Services, provided details on the work of the Peel Francophone Steering Committee and their upcoming event, “The French Link: Peel Family Services”, which will take place on September 26, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Shoppers World, Brampton.

The event will launch a new French Language Service online directory as well as raise awareness of the Francophone community in the Region of Peel.

Baby-Friendly Designation for Peel Public Health
 

Regional Council received a presentation from Eileen Chuey, Chair Elect, Ontario Breastfeeding Committee and Linda DeVouge, Acting Manager, Family Health, recognizing the Baby-Friendly Designation for Peel Public Health. 

Peel Public Health has the highest birth rate of any community health service in Canada to achieve this designation, with more than 16,500 births per year.

Environment, Transportation and Planning
2009 Peel Children’s Water Festival Update
 

Regional Council received information on the 2009 Peel Children’s Water Festival (PCWF).  This year marked the fourteenth anniversary of the Festival with more than 9,200 people attending the annual event.  The PCWF had 50 interactive activities focusing on environmental conservation and stewardship and highlighting the theme for 2009, “When it Rains, it Pours – Climate Change”.

Peel Region Official Plan Review (PROPR) – Draft Regional Official Plan Amendment 25 (ROPA 25) – Monitoring Policies and Planning and Conservation Land Amendment Act Conformity
 

Regional Council approved a schedule for a public meeting and information sessions regarding a Regional Official Plan Amendment related to new and updated monitoring Policies and Planning and Conservation Land Amendment Act Conformity. The public meeting will provide opportunity for the public to provide input with respect to the proposed Regional Official Plan Amendment.

The public meeting will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at Region of Peel Headquarters in the Council Chamber.

World Breastfeeding Week – September 27 to October 3, 2009
 

Regional Council proclaimed September 27 to October 3, 2009 “World Breastfeeding Week.”  World Breastfeeding Week is promoted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), Health Canada, Infant Feeding Action Coalition (INFACT Canada), and the Canadian Pediatric Society. The theme for the 2009 World Breastfeeding Week is “Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response”.

Literacy Month in Peel – September 2009
 

Regional Council proclaimed September 2009 “Literacy Month in Peel.”  Each year, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates International Literacy Day on September 8th to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and society. The Human Services Department (Ontario Works in Peel division and Children's Services division) and the Peel-Halton-Dufferin Adult Learning Network have partnered to raise awareness of events promoting literacy and lifelong learning in Peel throughout the month of September 2009.

Special Event Proclamations – Learn at Work Week – September 21 to 25, 2009, and Healthy Workplace Month – October 5 to November 1, 2009
 

Regional Council proclaimed September 21 to 25, 2009 “Learn at Work Week” and October 5 to November 1, 2009 “Healthy Workplace Month.” 

The Region of Peel recognizes the impact that workplace training has on the success of any business, thereby impacting our economy and ensuring the quality and security of jobs and raising our standard of living. The Region of Peel also supports employees who pursue learning experiences to further develop their knowledge and skills, thereby creating a culture of learning in the workplace that positively impacts key measures such as job performance and productivity.

Healthy workers and healthy workplaces are the success of any business, the Region of Peel is committed to providing a safe and healthy place to work.

Customer Service Week – October 5 to 9, 2009
 

Regional Council proclaimed October 5 - 9, 2009 “Customer Service Week”.  Each year, thousands of Citizens, Clients and Customers access the services and programs of the Region of Peel.  These programs are essential for health, safety and quality of life and excellence in service delivery is an important goal for all employees who deliver Regional programs and services.
