Peel Regional Police Overview and Status Report
 

Regional Council received a presentation from Chief Mike Metcalf and Deputy Chief Paul Tetzlaff.  The presentation included highlights from the 2009 Peel Regional Police Community Survey for the residential and business communities. The survey revealed that 84 per cent of residents are satisfied with their own personal safety from crime and 87 per cent of businesses are satisfied with safety from crime as it relates to business.

Chief Metcalf acknowledged six Peel Regional Police Officers who have volunteered their service to the Canadian Armed Forces while serving in Afghanistan

Peel Advisory Working Group on Older Adults’ Housing (PAWGOAH): Update Report of Activities from October 2008 to May 2009
 

Michael Wright, Chair and Derek Mercey, Vice-Chair, Peel Advisory Working Group on Older Adults’ Housing PAWGOAH) provided Regional Council an update on PAWGOAH activities from October, 2008 to May, 2009.

Derek Mercey highlighted the following achievements:

• PAWGOAH provided input into the development of the Peel Regional Housing Strategy;

• Representatives of PAWGOAH have made four public presentations to over 250 Peel residents, to date in 2009;

• Articles relating to older adults housing in the Region of Peel were included in the January, 2009 edition of the Care Guide magazine;

• PAWGOAH established a closer working relationship with the Region of Peel Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC).

New Ten-Year Agreement with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) for the Management, Operations, and Maintenance of the South Peel Water and Wastewater System
 

Mark Schiller, Director, Water Division, provided an overview the contract for the Management, Operations and Maintenance of the South Peel Water and Wastewater Facilities awarded to the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) for a period of ten years in the estimated annual amount of $35,510,616.

Personal Experience with the Accessible Transportation Coordination Office
 

Molly Mann commended the Region of Peel for the various programs and services provided by the Accessible Transportation Coordination Office (ATCO). Ms. Mann advised that both her brother, who utilizes the service and her family, have benefited tremendously, particularly due to the exemplary customer service provided by staff.

Management
Infrastructure Stimulus Funding (ISF) Approval
 

Regional Council thanked the Federal and Provincial Governments for the Federal/Provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Funding (ISF) that has been awarded to the Region of Peel in the amount of $98.592 million.

Norma Trim, Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Corporate Services, announced that two additional projects have been approved; the Port Credit trunk sewer and force main at a total project cost of $8.8 million and the McVean Drive trunk sewer from Castlemore Road to Countryside Drive at a total project cost of $4.5 million resulting in an extra 8.9 million dollars in Federal and Provincial funding.

Environment, Transportation and Planning
Peel Region Official Plan Review (PROPR) – Regional Official Plan Amendment 23 – Housing Policies
 

Regional Council approved a schedule for a public meeting and information sessions regarding the Regional Official Plan Amendment related to Housing Policies. The public meeting will provide opportunity for the public to provide input with respect to the proposed Regional Official Plan Amendment.

The public meeting will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at Region of Peel Headquarters in the Council Chamber.

Health
Appointment of Associate Medical Officer of Health
 

Regional Council approved the designation of Dr. Kathleen Dooling as Associate Medical Officer of Health. The appointment of Dr. Dooling will begin on July 2, 2009. Dr. Dooling has her MD from Memorial University and a Masters of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. She has also completed the requirements for the Fellowship in Community Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
