National Child Day 2008 – November 20, 2008

Regional Council proclaimed November 20 “National Child Day” to coincide with the United Nations “National Child Day”.

National Child Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of the basic human rights to which children (under the age of 18) everywhere are entitled; and to celebrate children as actors in their own lives as active citizens who can and should meaningfully contribute to decision-making as we create a Canada fit for children.

Women Abuse Prevention Month and National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Regional Council proclaimed November 2008 “Women Abuse Prevention Month” to raise awareness about violence against women and its prevention activities that attempt to eliminate all forms of women abuse and recognize that everyone has the right to live free of violence.

Regional Council also recognized December 6 as the “National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women”, a day to remember the 14 young women from l’Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal and all women who have lost their lives in an act of gender-based violence. The “National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women” was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada.

The Region of Peel and community partners, such as the Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse and the Peel Committee on Sexual Assault, are using a gender equity approach to better address the issue of woman abuse and create programs and policies which will best support women and their children.
