 Health
Responding to Seniors' Dental Health Needs

Regional Council received information about senior's dental needs in the Region of Peel. Approximately 65 per cent of persons 65 years of age and older in Peel do not have dental insurance and a recent study indicates that only 58 per cent have consulted a dentist within the last 12 months. Lack of insurance and low income impedes the ability of seniors in Peel to access dental care. Currently, there is no publicly funded universal program for seniors, however a review of options for a seniors' dental treatment program shows that a fee-reimbursement program best combines effectiveness, economy and cost-control and access, when combined with the existing Children in Need of Treatment program. Staff were directed to continue reviewing options for a seniors dental program and report to a future meeting with findings.

The initiative will also be supported by the Municipal Immigration Portal project, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and managed by the Region of Peel, for completion by early 2009.
