'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day' - June 15, 2006

Regional Council proclaimed June 15, 2006 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day' in the Regional Municipality of Peel.

The key objective of 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day' is to raise awareness of elder abuse (which encompasses neglect and mistreatment) throughout the world. The theme for 2006 is: "My World…Your World…Our World - Free of Elder Abuse".

Elder abuse is any action, or deliberate inaction, by a person in trust, which causes harm to an older person. Abuse can be physical, psychological, financial or it can take the form of neglect.

The Region of Peel initiates, supports and participates in a wide range of collaborative activities related to support for older adults including a close working relationship with the Peel Elder Abuse Network (PEAN).

The Region of Peel, Public Works Department continues to be recognized as an industry leader. At the 2005 Ontario Works Association (OPWA) Annual Awards Ceremony the Public Works Department received the Management Innovation; the Wally Wells Young Leader, and; the Engineering and Construction Project of the Year awards.

The Management Innovation award recognizes an individual, team or organization for the development, management and implementation of a creative idea, device, process or system that enhances the essentials of Public Works in serving the public and protecting the environment.

The Wally Wells Young Leader award was established in 2001 to recognize and encourage young employees of an OPWA member organization who have demonstrated an initial commitment to the profession and the Association.

The Engineering and Construction Project of the year award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects.

Recognition by OPWA further illustrates the success of Regional programs, as witnessed by implementation of similar practices across the Province of Ontario.

Speed Limit Change on Regional Road 3 (Britannia Road) from Terry Fox Way to Creditview Road

Regional Council approved a change to the existing posted speed limit of 80 km/h on Regional Road 3 (Britannia Road) to be reduced to 70 km/h, from Terry Fox to Creditview Road, in the City of Mississauga.

Requests were received from serveral residents to investigate a speed limit reduction on Britannia Road in the area of Terry Fox Way to Creditview Road. Staff evaluated the area, conducting radar speed studies, using the Northwestern Speed Methodology and taking into consideration development in the area.

Results indicated that the reduction of the speed limit from 80 km/h to 70 km/h is justified from Terry Fox Way to Creditview Road.
