Peel Regional
Council Appoints New Chief Administrative
Officer (CAO)
At
a Special Regional Council meeting held
on April 20, 2006, Regional Council unanimously
endorsed the selection of David Szwarc as
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the
Region of Peel, effective immediately.
David
Szwarc joined the Region of Peel in 1990
as Director of Ontario Works and moved into
the role of Commissioner of Social Services
in 2001.
Region of Peel Receives
the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting
Regional
Chair Kolb and Councillor Gael Miles, Chair of
the Management Section of General Committee announced
that the Region of Peel received the Canadian
Award for Financial Reporting (CANFR) from the
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).
The Region of Peel also received the award for
Financial Reporting Achievement.
This
is the forth consecutive year the Region of Peel
has received the award for financial reporting
and represents an important accomplishment for
the Region and its professional, dedicated staff.
Regional Council
Proclaimed the Week of May 15 to 20, 2006 "Paramedic
Week" in the Region of Peel
Paramedic
week takes place annually the third week of May,
across Canada. Peel Region Paramedic Services
(PRPS) responds to approximately 65,000 paramedic
response calls annually, providing critical life-saving
emergency medical care to over one million residents
in Peel.
Some
of the activities planned for the week include
interactive demonstrations, activities and displays,
staffed by Peel Paramedics, and an awareness barbecue
lunch to be hosted by Peel Paramedics and Public
Works, and ambulance ride-alongs for media and
Councillors.
The
Region of Peel is proud to join all paramedics
across Canada in the celebration of Paramedic
Week.

Proclaimed the Week of May 7 to 13, 2006 "Emergency
Preparedness Week" in the Region of Peel
Emergency Preparedness Week was introduced in
1995 by Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Canada to build public awareness of the emergency
preparedness principles and system in Canada.
The National theme for 2006 is 'Everybody Has
Their Reasons - Emergency Planning For Your Family'.
Through a cooperative approach with our community
partners, the Region of Peel will help local citizens
of all ages learn how to prepare their families

Regional Council
Proclaimed May 18, 2006 "Internal Audit Awareness
Day" in the Region of Peel
The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) is the
professional standard setting and training organization
for internal auditing around the world. The association
declared the month of May each year 'International
Internal Audit Awareness Month', a time for auditing
organizations to enhance their promotional activities.
One of the key roles of Internal Audit is to
provide assurance to Regional Council through
the Audit Subcommittee that Regional programs
are working effectively and are being delivered
efficiently.
Regional
Council received a report on the new Smoke Free
Ontario Act that becomes law on May 31, 2006 and
the implications for the Region of Peel.
This
new law will prohibit smoking in all enclosed
workplaces and enclosed public places in Ontario.
Designated smoking rooms (DSRs) will not be permitted
in any enclosed public place or enclosed workplace
in Ontario.
All tobacco vendors will be subject to stricter
laws on tobacco sales to minors, which include
requiring photo identification from any individual
who appears under 25 years of age.
