 Housing and Property
Peel Low-Income Renters to Receive Canada-Ontario Housing Allowances

Regional Council approved a plan to allocate funds to low-income renters provided through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. The allocation brings a total of $4.21 million into Peel to provide monthly subsidies over a five-year period to households paying more than 30 per cent of their income on rent or living in unsuitable housing.

The Region of Peel plans to target the housing allowances for high-needs households including victims of family violence, new Canadians and approximately 200 applicant households currently on waiting lists for subsidized housing.

Approximately 35,000 people are waiting an average of seven years for an available subsidized unit in Peel. A total of 78 per cent of those social housing applicants have a total gross household income of $20,000 per year.

Peel to Spend $19 Million of Gas Tax on Local Transit and Transportation Enhancements

Regional Council approved the allocation of its 2005-2006 share of the Federal Gas Tax funding to the City of Mississauga, City of Brampton and the Town of Caledon. The transfer of $19.3 million this year will be directly invested by the area municipalities to improve transit services in Mississauga and Brampton and commuter roads in Caledon.

Regional Council recommended that TransHelp, in consultation with the local area municipalities; the medical professionals; the taxi industry and relevant community organizations, undertake the development of a detailed business and operational plan by September, 2006 for consideration by Regional Council in determining the allocation of the 2007-2009 Federal gas tax contribution in 2007.

2006 Census data will be used to determine future allocation to the area municipalities of the Federal Gas Tax contribution to the Region of Peel.
