Dr. Howard Shapiro, Associate Medical Officer of Health, Providing an Update on West Nile Virus (WNV) Activity in the Region of Peel
 

Regional Council received an update from Dr. Shapiro on West Nile Virus activity in Peel. Dr. Shapiro informed Council that another bird has tested positive for WNV. This is the third WNV-positive bird found in Mississauga this season. Peel Health continues to receive reports of dead bird sightings from Peel residents.

The Region is utilizing quality assurance programs which regularly monitor all catch basins to ensure effective larvicide treatment. The Region is utilizing a new environmentally friendly larvicide - Vectolex WSP (water soluble pouch) - to treat catch basins leading to the environmentally sensitive areas.

Emergency Response at Pearson International Airport on August 2, 2005
 

Regional Council recognized the Emergency Response Teams from Peel Regional Police, Ambulance and Emergency Programs, Environmental Health division of Peel Health, Offices of the Medical Officer of Health and Associate Medical Officer of Health, the Public Works Spills Action Team, and the Ontario Provincial Police - Caledon Detachment, for their rapid response, professionalism and support during the Air France incident at Pearson International Airport on Tuesday, August 2, 2005.

Council also noted that there was international recognition of the emergency response which was hailed as "a classic example of what to do in an emergency situation" and that all of the staff who responded should be acknowledged, congratulated and thanked for their exemplary performance of duty.

Ron Dell'Agnese, Certified General Accountant (CGA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), The Institute of Internal Auditors, Toronto Chapter
 

On behalf of the Region of Peel, Chair Kolb, Dan Labrecque, Treasurer and Commissioner of Finance, and Beate Wilson, Director, Internal Audit were presented with the Institute of Internal Auditors' Recognition of Commitment Award.

This prestigious award recognizes internal auditing departments that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to improving the quality of internal auditing in the areas of professional excellence, quality of service and professional outreach.

The Region of Peel Internal Audit is one of only 12 internal auditing departments in the world receiving the award in the first half of 2005.

Intersection Safety Program to Reduce Red Light Running
 

Regional Council extended the existing Intersection Safety Program to Reduce Red Light Running for an additional two years. Regional Council will decide later this year if additional funding requirements for expansion and/or replacement of the red light camera equipment is required when the results of the Request for Proposals are finalized.

Region of Peel Housing Centralized Waiting List
 

Regional Council received an update as to the progress of Peel's establishment of a centralized waiting list for applicants requesting rent-geared-to-income housing within the Region of Peel which was mandated by the Province in the 2000 Social Housing Reform Act.

Currently Peel Access to Housing (PATH) provides households with a co-ordinated access to rent-geared-to-income through the 47 Social Housing Providers in Peel.

The current waiting list stands at 15,000 applicants, and the waiting period within the Region of Peel varies from 3 to 12 years, depending on the type and location of housing request. In 2004, 980 households were placed in rent-geared-to-income housing from the centralized waitlist.
