World Town Planning Day - November 8, 2003
 

Regional Council proclaimed November 8, 2003, World Town Planning Day in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Planning Department.

The Region of Peel endorsed World Town Planning Day as an opportunity to highlight the contribution that sound planning makes to the quality of our communities and environment. The celebration of World Town Planning Day gives the Region of Peel an opportunity to publicly recognize the participation and dedication of citizens who have contributed time and effort to the improvement of our communities.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day - November 19, 2003
 

Regional Council proclaimed November 19, 2003, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Planning Department.

GIS is a set of technology tools used by staff in many departments and organizations in Peel to assist in planning, co-ordinating and delivering goods and services.

The Region of Peel Planning department is participating in GIS Day by organizing a demonstration/showcase of GIS technology at The Peel District School Board - Central Board Office, HJA Brown Education Centre, in Mississauga. Representatives from Peel Region Planning and Information Technology Services, the area municipalities and other agencies will showcase practical GIS applications.

9-1-1 Awareness Week - December 15-21, 2003
 

In continuing with the 9-1-1 Awareness Campaign to focus public attention on the proper use of the 9-1-1 emergency number, explain the circumstances which warrant the use of 9-1-1 and communicate the importance of reducing the number of non-emergency and nuisance calls received by 9-1-1, Regional Council proclaimed December 15-21, 2003, 9-1-1 Awareness Week in the Region of Peel.

9-1-1 activities are planned from December 15-21, 2003 in the Region of Peel to educate the public about the appropriate use of the 9-1-1 emergency system. The "Paul Schram Memorial Award for the Emergency Communicator of the Year" will be presented during Regional Council on December 18, 2003.

Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day - November 5, 2003
 

Regional Council proclaimed November 5, 2003, Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day as requested by the Social Services Department.

November 5, 2003 will be the third annual Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day in Ontario. Early childhood educators provide a vital service helping young children and supporting parents in Peel to work and study. At individual childcare centres in
the Region of Peel, a range of activities will take place to recognize staff.

Peel Advisory Working Group on Older Adults' Housing Quarterly Report - Views of Older Adults in Peel Region on Housing Needs and Options: Final Report (October, 2003)
 

Regional Council approved the recommendations contained in the newly completed study "Views of Older Adults in Peel Region on Housing Needs and Options: Final Report" (October, 2003).

The Peel Advisory Working Group on Olders' Housing will be incorporating the 18 recommendations outlined in the study into its Strategic Work Plan.

The study provides up-to-date information collected directly from almost 1400 Peel residents aged 55 years and over, through a survey and focus group meetings.

State of the Region's Health 2003 Report: Focus on Foodborne Disease
 

Regional Council approved a recommendation requesting the Government of Ontario to amend the Ontario Food Premises regulation to require mandatory training and certification of food handlers; and that Peel Health implement a home food safety program. Peel Health will continue to develop its disclosure program to provide more information to the public regarding the food safety performance of commercial food premises.

New Provincial Funding for Communicable Disease Control
 

Regional Council approved a recommendation that the Regional Chair write to the Ministry of Health and Long -Term Care specifying that the 100 percent provincial funding for the monitoring and control of infectious diseases should be provided for a minimum of three years and that Full Time Equivalent (FTE) allocations for Peel be based on population, not on the number of hospital beds within the Region.

Directions For Success: Investing in Peel's Future - Strategic Plan Achievements For The 2000-2003 Term of Regional Council
 

Regional Council received a report from the Chief Administrative Officer titled "Directions for Success: Investing in Peel's Future - Strategic Plan Achievements for the 2000-2003 Term of Regional Council.

This report provides a summary of the achievements which contributed to the success of the Region's Strategic Plan, Directions for Success: Investing in Peel's Future. The Region's strategic plan has guided the work of the 2000-2003 Regional Council.
