First Annual Accessibility Plan - September 2003

and Regional Solicitor and Glenn Barnes, Chair,
Region of Peel's Accessibility Advisory Committee
(AAC) Presented an overview of the Region of Peel's
First Annual Accessibility Plan as required under
the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001,
(ODA), to Members of Regional Council.
The 2003 plan will serve as a starting point
for future years' annual plans allowing for identification
of required financial resources, formal education
programs and work plans.
Regional Council approved the cost of providing
support to the Region of Peel's Accessibility
Planning Program under the Ontarians with Disabilities
Act, 2001 including the position of Accessibility
Coordinator and the necessary funds for the remainder
Gurbax Malhi, MP
Presents a Cheque from Human Resources Development
Canada (HRDC) for "Open the Door to Better
Gurbax Malhi, MP, for Bramalea-Gore-Malton-Springdale,
presented the Region of Peel with a cheque in
the amount of $215,103 from Human Resources Development
Canada (HRDC) for a second session of the "Open
the Door to Better Futures Project" a work
experience, mentoring and life skills training
program for young single parents.
In 2001, HRDC approved funding of $253,586 to
implement a six month pilot program in Peel. The
program provided 22 young single parents with
work experience in a Regional childcare centre
with support and mentoring provided by Regional
Krista Campbell, Participant, provided Members
of Regional Council with an overview of the program
and its benefits to single parents.
Award of Excellence for Early Childhood Educators
Carolyn Parrish, MP, for Mississauga Centre,
presented the Prime Minister's Award of Excellence
for Early Childhood Educators to Sonia Tavares,
Resource Teacher, Cooksville Child Care Centre.
The Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in
Early Childhood Education honours outstanding
and innovative early childhood educators who excel
at fostering the early development and socialization
of children in their care. Employed with the Region
of Peel Children's Services department since 1992,
Sonia looks beyond her work at Cooksville Child
Care Centre and actively participates in the child
care community at large.
Regional Council proclaimed the week of October
18-26, 2003 as Week of the Child in the Region
of Peel, as requested by the Health Department.
The "Week of the Child" was established
by the Association of Early Childhood Educators
Ontario (AECEO), following the 1979 United Nations
International Year of the Child.
The Week of the Child is held annually during
the third week of October, and encourages communities
to focus on the needs, rights and interests of
children. The Region of Peel shares common principles
and goals with the AECEO.
Agreement to Provide Advanced Care Paramedic
Regional Council approved a three-year
agreement with Humber College Institute
of Technology and Advanced Learning, School
of Health Sciences, to provide advanced
care paramedicine education.
Advanced care paramedicine will provide
Paramedics in the Region of Peel with the
skills required to deliver advanced pre-hospital
medical interventions such as IV therapy,
drug therapy, advanced airway management,
advanced patient assessment skills, advanced
interpretation, advanced cardiovascular
care along with defibrillation, cardioversion
and cardiac pacing.

Region Council approved a recommendation that
the Region of Peel enter into Direct Negotiation
with Canadian Resource Recovery Limited to extend
the existing purchase order for waste transfer
and haulage services for waste from Brampton Community
Recycling Centre, the Britannia Public Waste and
Recycling Depot, and for unacceptable waste from
the KMS Peel Energy from Waste Facility, for a
6 month period ending December 31, 2003 at an
estimated cost of $580,000.
