2002 Region of Peel Employees' United Way Campaign
News Release

Emil Kolb, Regional Chair and Roger Maloney, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) presented a cheque on behalf of the 2002 Region of Peel Employees' United Way Campaign to Marilyn Matthews, Campaign Manager, and Steve Hall, Public Sector Chair of the Campaign Cabinet and Executive Member of the Board of Directors, United Way of Peel Region.

The Regional Chair and the CAO congratulated Regional staff for their invaluable effort with the campaign. This has been the highest campaign drive the Region has ever undertaken.

The 2002 Region of Peel Employees' United Way Campaign was chaired by the Public Works Department staff headed by Elaine Gilliland, Steve Runowski and Jeff Sword.

 Proclamation
International Year of Freshwater (2003)
News Release

Regional Council proclaimed the year 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Public Works Department. The program encourages governments to increase the awareness of the importance of sustainable freshwater use, management and protection. The United Nations also recognizes the importance of fresh water to life and has declared 2003 as the Year of Freshwater. Peel recognizes the value of fresh water and supports many programs which highlight the importance of sustainable water use, management and protection.

Transhelp Service to Passengers Unable to Communicate
 

Regional Council supported Transhelp's policy that passengers unable to communicate must travel with an escort. This service will ensure the safety and security of passengers, and protect staff and the Region from undue liability.

 Management
Delegation of Tax Ratio Setting Authority/2003 Reassessment Update
 

Regional Council approved the delegation of the upper-tier tax ratio setting authority under Section 310 of the Municipal Act. The Region of Peel has delegated its authority to establish tax ratios to its municipalities from 1998 to 2002. The delegation of authority allows the area municipalities flexibility in determining their own tax ratios.

Geographic Information System (GIS) Data Exchange with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Other Agencies
News Release

Regional Council will enter into an agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources for the exchange of Geographic Information System (GIS) data sets. The exchange and sharing of data will reduce costs and avoid potential duplication of effort associated with each organization separately maintaining the information.

Response to the Nutrient Management Act Draft Stage 2 Regulations
 

The Region of Peel will submit its comments to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Environment regarding the Nutrient Management Act Draft Stage 2 Regulations.

The Nutrient Management Act is meant to enhance the protection of Ontario's water resources by minimizing the effects of agricultural practices on the environment. The Act contains province-wide standards for agricultural practices, especially related to land-applied materials containing nutrients.

Proposed Waste Management System for 2005 Through 2012
 

Regional Council approved the following Waste Management System for 2005 through 2012:

Effective May 1, 2005:

Cities of Brampton and Mississauga:

  • a weekly co-collection of kitchen organics and single stream recyclables;
  • biweekly yard waste collection from July through to September;
  • weekly yard waste collection during the peak seasons (April to June and October to November); and
  • weekly garbage collection


Town of Caledon:

  • a weekly co-collection of co-collection of kitchen organics and single stream recyclables;
  • for settlement areas only, biweekly yard waste collection from April to November effective May 1, 2005.

Resolution Regarding the Safe Drinking Water Act
 

Regional Council approved a resolution requesting the Province of Ontario to proceed without delay with the release of a Provincial Water Management Strategy leading to a Provincial Water Policy for the protection of ground and surface water resources, as called for in the Report of the Walkerton Inquiry.
