  • Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) 2002 Award for Planning Excellence - Innovation Category. The Regions of Durham, Peel, and York received this Award in recognition of both the draft and final Tri-Regional Strategy Documents: "The Oak Ridges Moraine: Proposal for the Protection and Management of a Unique Landscape".

Gurbax Malhi, MP, Presenting a Cheque from Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) Towards the Funding of the "Open the Door to Better Futures" Project
 

Gurbax Malhi, MP for Bramalea-Gore-Malton-Springdale, presented a cheque in the amount of $253,586 from Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) to the Region of Peel to fund a pilot program called Open the Door to Better Futures. This program will provide single unemployed parents with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the Region's 11 directly operated child care centres.

Damian Albanese, Director, and Philip Rowe, Supervisor, Engineering and Construction Providing an Update on the Credit Valley Trunk Sewer Extension
Regional Council approved the recommendation to extend the viewing period for the Credit Valley Trunk Sewer Extension Environmental Study Report (ESR) document to September 20, 2002 and to advise the Minister of the Environment and Energy of the request for an extension. Regional staff will report back to Regional Council on this matter by September 19, 2002.

Public Works
  Private Well Abandonment Program, Project 02-1601

Regional Council endorsed a recommendation to continue the Private Well Abandonment Program through 2002/2003 to properly decommission (in accordance with Ontario Regulation 903) all unused private wells that could pose potential threat to groundwater and aquifer contamination in the Region of Peel. Staff were authorized to directly negotiate a contract extension for the work with W.B. Beatty and Associates at an estimated cost of $160,000.

Value Engineering for the Expansion and Upgrade of the South Peel Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities - City of Mississauga, Wards 1 and 2

Regional Council endorsed the recommendation to retain the consulting engineering firm of MacViro Consultants Inc. to provide Value Engineering services for the expansion and upgrade of the South Peel Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities at a total estimated cost of $1,460,000.

Expansion is required by mid-2006 at each of the two Wastewater Treatment Plants to meet the forecasted population requirements. The expansion of the Biosolids Facility at the Lakeview Wastewater Treatment Facility has been identified in the on-going Biosolids Master Plan being completed for the Region. The expansion of the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant is required by 2006 to meet the increasing water demand in Peel Region and to provide water to York Region.

Management
  Proposed Peel Joint Use Facility - Peel Regional Police (PRP) and Regional Municipality of Peel

Regional Council approved, in principle, the Peel Joint Use Facility described in the report of the Chief Administrative Officer and Acting Treasurer and Commissioner of Finance, dated June 25, 2002, titled "Proposed Peel Joint Use Facility, Peel Regional Police (PRP) and Regional Municipality of Peel".

The report proposes the creation of a joint Police Division building/Region of Peel administrative office facility on the lands to the east of 10 Peel Centre Dr.. Both the Regions of York and Halton have joint use Police Regional Facilities.

 Planning
  Adoption of Regional Official Plan Amendment Number 5

By-law 37-2002

Region of Peel Official Plan

Regional Council adopted Regional Official Plan Amendment Number 5 which amends Section 5.6.6.2 of the Regional Official Plan to clarify policies affecting residential and sensitive land uses, specifically day care centres, hospitals, schools and residential uses within the Airport Operating Area.

 Housing and Property
  Building Condition Assessment
Regional Council authorized the creation of a 2002 Housing Policy and Program Capital Project in the amount of $500,000, drawing from the Social Housing Building Maintenance Reserve, for the purpose of completing the balance of Building Condition Assessments for thirty-one (31) remaining Social Housing projects. Regional Council also authorized the commencement of the procurement process for the selection of consultants to undertake the associated activities.
