  National Volunteer Week, April 21 - April 27, 2002
 

Regional Council proclaimed the week of April 21 - April 27, 2002 as National Volunteer Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

Over 1,500 volunteers contribute to the development and delivery of Regional programs and special events. National Volunteer Week recognizes the valuable contributions by volunteers and helps recruit new volunteers.

  Earth Week, April 20 - April 27, 2002

Regional Council proclaimed the week of April 20 - April 27, 2002 as Earth Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Waste Management Division.

This year's theme is "Take Action and Work Towards Zero Waste" and aims to educate individuals on how to reduce waste and become environmentally responsible. Children are invited to participate in a new contest by giving examples of how their family reduces waste through the Three-Bag limit and why they believe the new program is environmentally friendly.

  Compost Awareness Week, April 28 - May 4, 2002
 

Regional Council proclaimed the week of April 28 - May 4, 2002 as Compost Awareness Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Waste Management Division.

Compost Awareness Week is a national event to promote reduction of waste through organic composting. Area schools will be encouraged to participate by selling backyard composters for a fundraiser and entering a school gardening contest.

  Emergency Preparedness Week, May 6 - May 12, 2002
 

Regional Council proclaimed the week of May 6 - May 12, 2002 as Emergency Preparedness Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by Ambulance and Emergency Services.

Emergency Preparedness Week heightens public awareness of emergency services and their readiness to handle individual, community and national disasters. Displays will be set up at various locations in the Region to promote the Emergency Preparedness Week's theme "Keeping Canada Safe: Emergency Preparedness starts with You".

  Region Thanked for Atlas Donation
More about the Regional Planning Atlas

Ken Adamson, Chair, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Janet McDougald, Chair, Peel District School Board thanked the Region, and especially the Planning department, for their outstanding work in developing the Regional Planning Atlas. The atlas was donated to all the schools in the Region. Copies of the atlas may be purchased for $25.00 at the Access Peel Counter at 10 Peel Centre Dr..

  "Planet Sponge!" to be Showcased at United Nations Environmental Conference
United Nations International Children's Conference Website

Regional Council was updated on "Planet Sponge!", an upcoming workshop by Public Works to be held at the United Nations International Children's Conference on the Environment in British Columbia. Planet Sponge is a hands-on, highly visual workshop to promote communication on environmental issues. Regional Council heard from three elementary school students who presented their environmentally friendly ideas to Council and will be representing the Region of Peel at the conference.

 Public Works
  2002 Sanitary Sewer Surcharge Rate Approved

By-law 24-2002

Last years's Charge: By-law 18-2002

Regional Council enacted By-law 24-2002 to establish the 2002 Qualitative Sewer Surcharge Rate at $1 per thousand imperial gallons. The surcharge allows industries to discharge non-toxic overstrength effluents in three categories, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids and Solvent Extractable of Animal and Vegetable Origin, to the Region's sanitary sewer system. In 2001, 77 companies had surcharge agreements with the Region.

  Three Bag Exemption Periods Increased


Information


Regional Council approved the expansion of the Three Bag Standard exemption periods from one week to two weeks, effective May 1, 2002. Exemption periods allow residents to dispose of additional waste without purchasing extra garbage bag tags. The three periods are determined by peak waste periods throughout the year and are as follows:

  • the first two weeks of January
  • the week of Victoria Day and the week following Victoria Day in May
  • the week of Labour Day and the week following Labour Day in September

 Human Services
  Additional Vehicles Purchased for Transhelp
Facts about Transhelp

Regional Council approved the purchase of two additional buses for the Region's Transhelp transit service. The extra vehicles are needed to accommodate the growing need for the Transhelp service Transhelp expects to provide 224,500 trips in 2002 to impaired residents in need of transportation. Seven other vehicles will also be purchased to replace ageing vehicles in the fleet.

 Management
  2002 Property Tax Levy Approved
By-law 21-2002

Regional Council enacted By-law 21-2002, to apportion the 2002 net levy requirement of $503.6 million to the three area municipalities in accordance with the Financial Control By-law. The levies are based on the Current Value Assessment (CVA) and are paid by instalments throughout the year.
