Regional Council appointed Councillor George
Carlson as the Chair of the Local Governance Ad
hoc Committee and Councillor Ian Sinclair as Vice-Chair
for a term ending November 30, 2003. The Local
Governance Ad hoc Committee was established in
1992 and meets as required to discuss current
issues relating to municipal governance. Councillor
Gael Miles was also appointed to the Committee.
Regional Council designated three minutes at
the start of each General Committee and Regional
Council meeting for a presentation on issues,
statistics and concerns about affordable housing
in the Region of Peel. Each Regional Council member
will make the presentations on a rotation basis.
Councillor Pat Mullin, who requested the presentations,
updated Council on affordable housing waiting
lists and overnight shelter statistics.
Regional Council approved a licensing agreement
with Bell Mobility Cellular Inc. for the installation
of 4 communications antennae and related equipment
on the Snelgrove Water Tower located on Mayfield
Road. Under the 5 year agreement, Bell Mobility
will pay the Region $15,000 per year for placing
their equipment on the Region's land.
Regional Council was updated on issues, key trends
and concerns relating to health in the Region
of Peel. In the first of a series of health reports,
the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) reported on
four issues detailing the relationship between
health and wealth, trends in tobacco use and tobacco-related
diseases, motor vehicle accidents and the increase
of childhood obesity.
Regional Council approved funding for six community
programming initiatives in the Region of Peel.
Initially started in October 2000, each of the
six initiatives has proven successful in serving
the community and meeting its goals and service
targets. Council allocated $219, 520 to continue
these programs for another year.
Regional Council retained Marshall Macklin Monaghan
to provide design and contract administration
services at an estimated cost of $267,020 for
improvements at the intersections of Cawthra Road/North
Service Road, Cawthra Road/Queensway East, Cawthra
Road/ Burnhamthorpe Road and Cawthra Road/Highway
403/ Eastgate Parkway. The improvements are needed
due to increased traffic volume along Cawthra
Road. Construction will begin in the Summer of
Project - Watermain Construction on Mayfield Road
- City of Brampton, Ward 10 and Town of Caledon,
Regional Council approved a 300 mm (12 inch)
diameter watermain to be constructed on Mayfield
Road from house #8664 to house #8782 in the City
of Brampton and Town of Caledon. The 412 metre
(1352 feet) watermain was requested by affected
property owners on Mayfield Road and will cost
approximately $155,000. The Region's contribution
will be approximately $112,498.
