  Mental Health Week, May 7-13, 2001
   
  Regional Council proclaimed the week of May 7-13, 2001 as Mental Health Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Housing and Property department and the Peel Mental Health Housing Coalition (PMHHC).

Mental Health Week is given recognition across Canada and raises awareness of mental health issues such as adequate and affordable housing.

  Road Safety Program Funding Increased
   
 

Regional Council approved a request from the Town of Caledon and Inspector Ken MacDonald, Caledon Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) to increase the O.P.P. Municipal Policing Services operating budget by $9200. The extra funding will be used for the Road Safety Value Partnership (RSVP) program.

 Appointments
   
  United Way of Peel Region Board of Directors
   
  Regional Council appointed Councillor Richard Whitehead to the United Way of Peel Region Board of Directors for a term ending November 30, 2003. The Board of Directors consists of 19 members to co-ordinate initiatives to raise funds for over fifty community agencies in the Region of Peel.

  Emergency Ad hoc Committee (ECAC) Chairs
   
 

Regional Council appointed Councillor Paul Palleschi as the Chair of the Emergency Communications Ad hoc Committee (ECAC) for a term ending November 30, 2003. Councillors Maja Prentice and Carol Seglins were appointed as Co-Chairs for a term ending November 30, 2003.

 Human Services
   
  Transhelp Receives Emergency Funding
   
 

Regional Council allocated $300,000 from its Social Grants Reserve to meet the immediate demand for Peel's Transhelp trips linked to dialysis. In the first three months of 2001, requests for special-needs rides increased by 11.5% over the same period last year, creating an unanticipated strain on the service.

  Calls to Peel Public Health Increasing
   
 

Regional Council received an update on the progress of Peel's one-stop access to public health "Peel Public Health". Since the launch in June 2000, calls to the Health Line have increased by 68%. To access this service, call 905-799-7700 (905-584-2276 from Caledon) 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

 Public Works
   
  Local Improvement Project - Intersection Improvement at Hwy 24 and Hwy 136/Cataract Road, Town of Caledon, Ward 1
   
 

Regional Council approved a contract to Graham Brothers Construction Ltd. to improve the intersection at Hwy 24 and Hwy 136/Cataract Road in the Town of Caledon. Council retained the engineering firm Chisholm, Fleming and Associates to look after contract administration and construction inspection for the intersection improvement.

  Air Pollution Control (APC) Services
   
 

Regional Council approved a contract with Safety-Kleen Ltd. and Philip Environmental for the supply of Air Pollution Control (APC) Residue Removal and Disposal Services at the KMS Peel Inc. incinerator. The one year contract will cost approximately $677,092 and is renewable on a month to month basis.

 Housing and Property
   
  Homeless Youth Village Proposed
   
 

Regional Council approved, in principle, the proposed development of a multi-service facility to support homeless youth in the Region of Peel. The focus of the youth village will be emergency shelter, harm reduction and education. Council retained the present consultant to continue developing the proposal and overall project implementation.

  Transitional Family Housing Project Proposal
   
  Regional Council allocated funds provided by Federal and Provincial social programs towards developing a proposal for a family transitional housing project in the Region of Peel. The need for transitional housing was identified as a priority in Peel's Community Support Plan to Address Homelessness in the Region.

 Management
   
  Peel's 2001 Assessment and Tax Policy
   
  Regional Council, on the recommendation of the Finance department, supported a tax policy to not implement graduated taxes, not create optional classes, not adopt a Municipal tax reduction program; and not adopt a Phase-in program for residential taxes. Regional Council received a letter on April 19, 2001 from the Minister of Finance granting a request to extend the April 30, 2001 tax deadline to May 31, 2001.
