The following are decisions made by Regional Council on
Thursday, January 18, 2001.

  Hwy 427 Extension Committee
  Regional Council appointed Chair Kolb, Councillor Palleschi, and the Commissioners of Public Works and Planning or their designates to the City of Vaughan's Highway 427 Extension Committee. Councillor Whitehead was appointed as an alternate to Councillor Palleschi.

  Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance
  Regional Council appointed Mayor McCallion to the Board of Directors of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA) for a term ending November 30, 2003. The purpose of the GTMA is to promote the Greater Toronto Area internationally to attract investment and jobs to the Greater Toronto Region. Mayor Fennell was appointed as the alternate Regional representative.

  Peel Agricultural Advisory Working Group
  Regional Council appointed Brampton City Councillor John Hutton to serve on the Peel Agricultural Advisory Working Group (PAAWG) for a term ending November 30, 2003.

  Halton-Peel District Health Council Board
  Regional Council nominated Councillor Morrison to be re-appointed to the Halton-Peel District Health Council Board (HPDHC) beginning June 2001. Councillors DiMarco and Bissell were also nominated to fill a position that will become vacant in June 2001.

  Region of Peel Assumes Ambulance Service
  Regional Council was updated on the transfer of operations for Land Ambulance Service within Peel. The Region officially assumed responsibility for this emergency service on January 1, 2001 and the transfer went smoothly. Peel also added three recently purchased emergency service vehicles to its fleet on January 1, 2001.

  Convenience Copier Contract Awarded
  Regional Council approved a three year trial contract with Minolta Business Equipment (Canada) Ltd. for the lease, installation and servicing of 104 Photocopiers to be used at Regional Offices. The estimated annual cost of this service is $273,333. Peel's previous photocopier contract was with Canon Canada Inc.

 Public Works
  Leaf and Yard Waste Composting Contract Extended
  Regional Council extended its current contract with All Treat Farms Ltd. to provide composting services within the Region of Peel for an additional two years. It is estimated that 48,000 tonnes of bagged yard waste will be collected over the next two years at a cost of $45.00 per tonne and 5,300 tonnes of "unbagged" leaves will be vacuumed and processed at a cost of $18.00 per tonne.

  Watermain Construction Contract Awarded
  Regional Council awarded a contract to 968907 Ontario Inc. and Gasmuz Construction Inc. for the construction of a 400mm (16 inch) diameter watermain along Sombrero Way in the City of Mississauga. The 764 metre watermain will span from Mavis Road to Second Line West and cost $362,900.

  Community Recycling Centres Approved
  Regional Council designated 7 acres at the Clarkson Water Pollution Control Plant for a Community Recycling Centre to be constructed and opened in 2002. Council also designated 7 acres at the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant for another Recycling Centre to be opened in 2003. Each Centre is estimated to cost $250,000.

  Stopping Prohibition on Old Church Road
  Regional Council acted on Town of Caledon Resolution W-468-2000 and passed Regional By-law 1-2001 to prohibit stopping on both sides of Regional Road 22 (Old Church Road) for a distance of 305 metres in either direction of Innis Lake Road between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

 Human Services
  Tougher Tobacco Controls Desired
  Regional Council, in the spirit of January 15 - 19, 2001 being National Non-Smoking Week, passed a resolution encouraging the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to enhance its Tobacco Control Act and introduce tougher provincial standards on smoking in public places.

  Breathing Space Campaign Continued
  Regional Council approved a recommendation to allow Ellis Teichman Communications to continue supplying production and media services for Peel's involvement in the GTA-wide "Breathing Space" campaign. This campaign encourages people to "Take it Outside" and make homes and cars smoke-free. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has committed $264,725 for this project.
