The following are decisions made by Regional Council on Thursday, September
Internet Safety Week, October 1 - 7, 2000
Regional Council proclaimed the week of October 1 - 7, 2000 as Internet
Safety Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Peel Police
Services Board (PPSB) and Peel's community based Internet Safety Committee.
Implementation of internet safety education and awareness are essential
in protecting children from being victimized by sexual predators.
Protection of our children is a paramount importance for the future
welfare of our society.
Falls Prevention Week, October 2 - 8, 2000
Regional Council proclaimed the week of October 2 - 8, 2000 as Falls
Prevention Week in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Health
Falls are a major public issue and a major cause of acute injury
and permanent disability, particularly in individuals 65 years of
age and older. There are approximately 61,470 individuals 65 years
of age and older living in the Region of Peel. Many falls can be prevented
by reducing environmental risks such as inadequate lighting, dangerous
stairs, loose rugs and slippery surfaces.
Week of the Child, October 14 - 21, 2000
Regional Council proclaimed the week of October 14 - 21, 2000 as
the Week of the Child in the Region of Peel, as requested by the Social
Access to and informed choices about child care allow parents to
continue to work or increase skills through training and education.
The Region of Peel's Child Care Centres offer children a learning
environment where they develop intellectually by receiving a quality
early childhood education. Children are vital to the growth and spirit
Paul Schram Memorial Award to the Call-taker of the Year
Regional Chair Emil Kolb, Chief Noel Catney, Peel Regional Police
and Joseph Moore, General Manager, Ambulance and Emergency Programs
presented the 2000 Paul Schram Memorial Award for the 911 Call-taker
of the Year to Chris Moffat.
Peel Regional Police Business Plan for the Hiring of Additional
Regional Council endorsed the Peel Regional Police Business Plan
to immediately hire five Communicators at a cost of $281,680 to meet
service delivery and workload demands.
Structural Rehabilitation, Cleaning and Closed Circuit T.V. (CCTV)
Inspection of Existing Sanitary Sewers and Sewer Laterals at Various
Locations in the Region of Peel - City of Mississauga, Wards 1,2,4,5,6,7
- City of Brampton, Ward 8 and the Town of Caledon, Ward 5
Regional Council awarded the proposal/contract for cleaning, inspection
and cured-in-place structural rehabilitation of existing circular
sanitary sewers, including structural rehabilitation of sewer laterals,
to Insituform Technologies Inc. for an estimated total cost of $2,243,178
(plus applicable taxes).
Emergency Standby Power Generation, Herridge
and Streetsville Pumping Stations - City of Mississauga, Wards 2 and
Regional Council awarded the contract for the supply of emergency
standby generators for the Herridge and Streetsville Pumping Stations
at an estimated total cost of $2,150,000.
Watermain Replacement on Cardross Road, Steepbank Crescent, Riverspray
Crescent, Wilcox Road and Camilla Place, Project 00-1370 - City of
Mississauga, Wards 3 and 4
Regional Council awarded the contract for the replacement of watermains
on Cardoss Road, Steepbank Crescent, Riverspray Crescent, Wilcox Road
and Camilla Place, in the City of Mississauga, Wards 3 and 4, to FCM
Construction Limited, for an estimated total cost of $1,000,000.
Canadian Waste Services (CWS) Adams Mine Proposal
Regional Council declined to endorse the Canadian Waste Services
(CWS) Adams Mine Proposal until, among other things, Regional Council
is satisfied that the site will be engineered so that it is environmentally
safe and will comply with all conditions required by the Certificate
of Approval (C of A) issued under the Environmental Protection Act.
