The following are decisions made by Regional Council on Thursday,
April 20, 2000.
1999 United Way Campaign Co-Chairs
Roger Maloney, Chief Administrative Officer, appeared before Regional
Council to present plaques to 1999 United Way Campaign Co-Chairs and
Peel employees Bonnie Shulman and Jeff Sword for their work in a successful
Award Presentation to Councillor Gael Miles, City of Brampton,
Wards 7 and 11
Chief Noel Catney, Chief of Peel Regional Police, appeared before Regional
Council regarding the recognition of Councillor Gael Miles as the recipient
of the Detective Robert Boyne Memorial Crime Prevention Award.
The Retirement of Dr. Sam Green, Consulting Public Health Dentist
Peter Graham, Commissioner of Health appeared before Regional Council
regarding the retirement of Dr. Sam Green and to celebrate his 32 years
as a Consulting Public Health Dentist.
Region of Peel School Accommodation Task Force
Regional Council supported and endorsed the joint action of the School
Accommodation Task Force in their pursuit of funding from the Provincial
Government for student accommodation in the Region of Peel. Membership
of the Task Force includes representation from the staff and students
of the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel District School
Board and the Parents of Peel.
New Traffic Control Signal Installation, Regional
Road 5 (Derry Road) at Edwards Boulevard-City of Mississauga, Ward
Regional Council approved the installation of traffic signals at the
intersection of Derry Road and Edwards Boulevard in the City of Mississauga,
Ward 5, for an estimated total cost of $95,000.
Intersection Safety Program to Reduce Red Light Running
Regional Council awarded the cooperative proposal for the supply, installation,
operation and maintenance of red-light camera systems to Lockheed Martin
IMS Canada Inc. upon successful completion of "proof of performance"
and acceptance by the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel for an
estimated amount of $695,500 (representing Peel's share). Council requested
that the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga recover their court administration
costs from the violation revenues processed from the Red Light Camera
and stepped-up enforcement of traffic infractions.
Sanitary Sewer Replacement on Elizabeth Street from Wellington
Street West to Harold Street-City of Brampton, Ward 4
Regional Council approved additional funding in the amount of $379,000
(for a revised total project amount of $1,680,000) for the replacement
of structurally deficient 200 mm (8 inch) and 250 mm (10 inch) sanitary
sewer on Elizabeth Street from Wellington Street West to Harold Street
in the City of Brampton, Ward 4.
Sanitary Sewer and Watermain Replacement, Elmwood Avenue, Oakwood
Avenue, and Hurontario Street-City of Mississauga, Ward 1
Regional Council approved the replacement of the sanitary sewer and
watermain on Elmwood Avenue, Oakwood Avenue and Hurontario Street in
the City of Mississauga, Ward 1, for an estimated total cost of $840,000.
Backyard Composter Program
Regional Council approved the continued subsidization of the Backyard
Composter Program for 2000. Council further approved funding in the
amount of $200,000 for the distribution of 8,000 composters.
Vacancy on the Crime Prevention Through Environmental
Design (CPTED) Advisory Committee
Regional Council appointed Councillor Rhoda Begley, City of Brampton,
Wards 8 and 9, as the alternate Brampton Regional Councillor to serve
on the Peel Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Advisory
Committee for a term commencing April 20, 2000 until November 20, 2000.
Greater Toronto Services Board (GTSB) Strategic
Transportation Plan "Removing Roadblocks"
Regional Council requested that the GTSB modify its Strategic Transportation
Plan to identify and protect for increased freeway capacity in strategic
locations, including the widening of Highway 407 and designated truck
lanes on all highways, and in particular to address the need for identifying
and protecting a future east-west "Highway 413 Corridor" linking
to a mid-Niagara facility.
