RECOMMENDATION GC-185-2004:

WHEREAS the 9-1-1 emergency number service is an essential component of our public safety system;

AND WHEREAS, the Region of Peel is continuing with the 9-1-1 Awareness Campaign to focus public attention on the proper use of the 9-1-1 emergency number; explain circumstances which warrant the use of 9-1-1; and communicate the importance of reducing the number of non-emergency and nuisance calls received by 9-1-1;

AND WHEREAS, calling 9-1-1 helps to ensure that the required emergency service is reached as quickly as possible;

AND WHEREAS, the residents of the Region of Peel should become aware of the proper use of the 9-1-1 service for emergencies;

AND WHEREAS, the hard work and dedication of emergency communications has made the 9-1-1 service the exemplary service the residents of the Region of Peel have indicated it to be;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT the week of December 6-12, 2004 be proclaimed as 9-1-1 AWARENESS WEEK in the Regional Municipality of Peel.

WHEREAS, the week of November 14-20, 2004 is being promoted by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI as Geography Awareness Week;

AND WHEREAS, November 17, 2004 has been targeted as a worldwide GIS Day;

AND WHEREAS, there will be many worldwide activities with the goal being to engage people in learning and caring about geography;

AND WHEREAS, the purpose of GIS Day is to promote the awareness and appreciation for how important Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is as an enabling technology;

AND WHEREAS, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is being used by many departments and organizations in Peel;

And further, that additional funds of $48,544 be provided to Capital Project 04-2315 from the Sewer Capital Financing Stabilization Reserve (R0242).

WHEREAS the month of October is Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in Ontario and Canada;

AND WHEREAS, public education and prevention are the best ways to end the neglect and abuse of children;

AND WHEREAS, this month is a time to focus on building awareness for the prevention of child abuse and neglect in our community;

AND WHEREAS, the Region of Peel, through its many programs and services, including: Children's Services, Social Services, Healthy Babies Health Children Program, Child and Reproductive Health Programs and Peel Regional Police Services demonstrate a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the Children of the Region of Peel;

AND WHEREAS, the Purple Ribbon, the symbol of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month, is a reminder that the problem of child abuse and neglect continues and will require all of us to become involved to keep children safe and healthy;

AND WHEREAS, children are vital to the growth and spirit of communities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT the month of October 2004 be proclaimed as CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT PREVENTION MONTH in the Regional Municipality of Peel.

And further, that should negotiations for an extension be unsuccessful that approval be granted to award Document 2004-260P to the lowest bidder for a period of one year;

And further, that the matter be referred to the area municipalities to investigate Region-wide bidding rather than by municipality.

That By-law 125-2004 to confirm the proceedings of Regional Council at its meeting held on October 28, 2004, and to authorize the execution of documents in accordance with the Region's by-laws relating thereto, be given the required number of readings, taken as read, signed by the Regional Chair and the Regional Clerk, and that the Corporate Seal be affixed thereto.
